A minimum of 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Security Action on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 people were killed in a police operation against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.
Four police officers were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. Over 80 people were detained.
Intense confrontations erupted when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with shooting, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements close to Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.
State officials said a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Residents have described the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the operation began.

The Red Command group has been increasing their control throughout the region, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.
Rio's police reported more than 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the operation, in addition to dozens of firearms.
