A Tale of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Ground

During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to book lodging when I arrived, however when I arrived, a large conference was in town and all the budget hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the terminal – but quickly found that airport, not like the one back home, is not open all night. Not knowing what my next move should be and growing worried, I boarded public transport and began walking in the direction of the casino, reasoning I might spend the night in a place that stayed open all night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for nailing a crucial interview the next morning, but as a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared out of place because a young woman noticed me wandering around the city and inquired whether I needed help. I recounted my situation and without hesitation she offered I was welcome to sleep on the ground of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, considering that was where my interview would take place the next morning. She even offered me some free dinner: one of the stuffed baguettes she had from her work shift. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a secure location and safe for the evening.

Looking back, I can appreciate what a big chance she took being a woman inviting a man she’d just met sleep on her floor. Back then I existed within a bubble of male privilege and did not consider about things like that. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she took that chance – but still incredibly thankful.

I never did study at ANU, and I didn’t meet her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of kindness. It is my wish life has repaid her good deed many times over. Our society requires more folks like that woman.
