US air traffic controllers are more and more looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays caused by climate and other issues.

More than 3,000 US flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to hear their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields said travel would be held up due to a lack of workers - one of the highest since the closure started.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my controllers focused on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official stated.

On that day, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as other flights stretching north to the city of Oakland, California.
