Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Yes, I would be lying if I denied it," Newsom commented when asked about contemplating a presidential run following the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

Newsom's time in office as California's leader wraps up in January 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he cautioned that any choice is still years away.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

Newsom has emerged as a notable critic of the Trump administration, leveraging his social media accounts and pushing a proposition that would increase Democratic House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has made him a target from critics.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor does not care about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on a major news network. Duffy disclosed intentions to withhold federal funds from California and warned eliminating the authority to provide trucking licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from California," he said, in the wake of a recent deadly accident in the state involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in loss of life and four injuries.

His administration noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the individual's authorization repeatedly, which permitted him to secure a CDL under U.S. law.

Duffy had earlier announced he was holding back $40m from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for CDL holders.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," the governor's team retorted in a recent release responding to Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a death rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A this month's survey showed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate believed that the governor should run for president in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has grown to an typical level of a third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an mean of previous highs to current figures.

In previous months, Newsom stated while traveling several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.

He also referenced his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The thought that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, extraordinary," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who emerges in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
