Powerful winter winds brought walls down upon flimsy shelters sheltering people displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than 4 people. This tragedy underscores the dangerous living conditions that continue after over two years of intense bombardment and critical shortages of aid.

Ceasefire Provides Little Relief from Severe Elements

While a ceasefire has been in effect since last fall, aid groups state that residents broadly lack the sufficient shelter necessary to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, said on Tuesday that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a one-year-old boy died of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has enabled us to witness loss of life in all its forms," said Bassel Hamouda after the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have paused for now, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Tent Collapse

As per the medical center, 3 members of a single family — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall fell onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 others were injured in the event.

Their relatives on Tuesday started removing the debris that had entombed their family and rebuilding the tent shelters for survivors.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Emergency

The UN and its humanitarian partners were handing out tents, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as food and sanitation items across Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of Palestinians reside in makeshift shelters since their houses were reduced to rubble during the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations contend an insufficient amount of shelter materials are entering Gaza during the truce.

Fatality Numbers Since the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, which is part of the administration, reports over four hundred and forty individuals have been killed by gunfire and their remains taken to hospitals after the ceasefire began. The authority keeps comprehensive casualty data that are considered generally reliable by international bodies and outside analysts.

James Elder, representing the UN children's fund, stated on Tuesday that at least 100 children under the age of 18 – sixty boys and forty females – had been killed after the ceasefire began due to military operations, including drone strikes, air raids, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. Those figures, he explained, reflected incidents where sufficient information had been compiled to justify recording, but the overall count is expected to be higher. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"While 'explosions and shootings have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not ceased," Elder informed reporters at a UN briefing in Geneva by video from the Strip. "Therefore what the international community now terms quiet would be viewed as a crisis in any other place," he said.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of over two million individuals has been struggling to fend off the cold weather and bad weather at bay while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently needed throughout the winter months. It’s the 3rd cold season after the conflict between the state and Hamas began on 7 October 2023, when fighters stormed into southern Israel and murdered approximately 1,200 people and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

The local health authority reports over 71,400 Palestinians have been killed in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
