Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the board at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
He remarked in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously headed the prestigious university, stated on Monday that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The newly public messages demonstrated that the official communicated with the financier until the eve of his 2019 arrest for accused sex trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it accepted Summers' determination to depart.
"We value his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the directors," the company stated.
Legislative Background
This development follows after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on Tuesday to endorse a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will subsequently move to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. Trump has indicated he intends to sign the measure, after changing his view on the matter following pushback from his supporters.
Email Contents
A batch of financier-linked emails disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently included several prominent individuals in the financier's former circle, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The communications showed that the professor and the financier dined together frequently, with he often seeking to introduce the academic to notable world leaders.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were released with the general audience, the former official said he accepted "full responsibility for my misguided judgment to continue communicating with Mr Epstein".
He further stated that he desired "to reestablish trust and repair connections with the persons most important to me".
Professional History
Summers occupied leadership roles under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He led the university from five years and is still a professor there. When declaring his departure from public duties earlier on this week, he stated he would continue his educational duties.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive research organization in DC where Summers was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was no longer connected with the organization.
He joined the leadership of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a defeated move to replace its top executive the company leader.
