Kalimuendo Strikes as Nottingham Forest Claim Nostalgic Win Against Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” echoed through the City Ground as Forest fans celebrated a further win against Malmö. A great deal has occurred since Trevor Francis’s decisive header clinched the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but Forest still hold dear those glorious moments. Equally, major changes have occurred in the weeks since the manager assumed control, with the team appearing reinvigorated and securing a comfortable victory courtesy of goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of progressing in the Europa League.

Building Steam with Another Consecutive Victory

For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after finishing in sixth place in their domestic league – represented a third straight win across all competitions and further built on the positive energy gained from the previous week's success at Anfield. While this fixture was a reminder of Forest’s European Cup success in spirit, the game itself was devoid of any real tension or jitters.

It proved to be an occasion filled with nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive clash between the teams since the European Cup final 46 years ago.

Forest fully embraced the history, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by giving them, along with their Malmö opponents, the red-carpet treatment. Thirteen members of the Malmö's squad from that time were also present. The two clubs shared a meal together prior to the kick-off. Forest legends and company received a rousing reception when they assembled on the field 15 minutes before kick-off, and a typically superb display was shown in the Trent End.

Remembering History

“May 30, 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed half of a large banner, in capital letters. While no one required a reminder of what happened next, the rest was revealed as the players came out from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. A second brilliant display showed Brian Clough observing proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.

Dominance from the Start

So, the hosts had drunk in those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was strong, as well. They were in full command from the moment Kalimuendo fired an attempt off target inside the opening moments and established a two-goal advantage by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, had a go.

It seemed appropriate that Yates, who came to Forest as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the visitors' defence captained by their own academy product skipper, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford. The home centre-back Milenkovic saw a cross deflect off a opponent and into the pathway of the midfielder, who swept home right-footed from just inside the box to register his first goal since March.

Second Strike Seals Control

The scorer was implicated in the team's second goal on the brink of the interval, too, his free header saved by the shot-stopper Ellborg but the alert forward poised to tap in the rebound from point-blank range. McAtee, the playmaker handed a rare start and only his second outing since the autumn, was the spark, chipping a perfect ball towards Yates at the back post.

Just moments before, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was turned aside off the defender Colin Rösler, son of ex- Manchester City forward Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic had previously had a strong header instinctively saved by Ellborg, who was back in place of the former Aston Villa goalie Robin Olsen.

Opponent's Struggles

This was Malmö’s first match since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on November 9th, and they found it hard to equal Forest’s intensity. Forest made it 3-0 when the defender scored after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a corner. The captain had a volley stopped, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.

Forest then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic shot wide from 30 yards. It was one of those nights. Dyche, mindful of the upcoming domestic fixture here against Brighton, implemented seven changes from the side that stunned the Reds at Anfield recently, when they also scored three goals, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus midway through the final period.

Hiccup-Free Evening for the Team

It turned out to be a flawless night for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could take off the defender with the game long since sewn up and subsequently introduced 19-year-old defender Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard supplying “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad demonstrated they are capable of producing of excitement, too.
