The England midfielder Must Eliminate the Nonsense to Earn a Key Place In Coach Tuchel.
If Jude Bellingham aims to earn his place back into the English best squad, he would be wise to eliminate the nonsense. His reaction after noticing that he was going up after a match of mixed performance in Tirana was not good enough.
"I’d rather not make more out of it but I hold to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the teammates who substitute on," commented the coach. "Decisions are made and you need to comply as a player."
There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no need for an outburst. Kane had recently scored to make the Three Lions two goals ahead in a meaningless fixture, the game had six minutes to go and the player, following an inconsistent display, was just shown a yellow for bringing down Armando Broja. This could scarcely be called a controversial substitution. Indeed it might have been reckless for the manager to leave Bellingham on considering there was a risk he would be suspended of the initial fixture of the competition by picking up a second caution.
Drawing Attention on Himself
But Bellingham made himself the center of attention. No one could overlook the young midfielder's annoyance when he clocked that he would be substituted for another player. He threw his arms up and even though he exchanged a handshake while heading to the touchline there was no doubt that Tuchel did not appreciate it.
This is the challenge that Bellingham must overcome. He applauded his teammate for delivering the cross for Harry Kane to head in his second of the night, but everything else was self-defeating. It is not as if complaining was going to alter the decision. The coach has talked so much about honoring the team structure and the value of acting professionally.
In the Spotlight
The midfielder, omitted from last month’s squad, has been under scrutiny upon his return to the team in the current camp. Practically he has been on trial and he has not done himself any favours through his behavior to being taken off as the side rounded off a flawless qualification run by overcoming a feisty challenge from Albania.
Tactics and Formation
This implies the jury is out on if England function at their best with Bellingham in the team. What we saw was not definitive. Tuchel tried new things by the coach early on. Under him, England have gained the team structure and clarity over the past few matches, employing a holding player, a No 8, an attacking midfielder and dedicated wide players, but there was a different feel in this match. Jarell Quansah was given his first cap, Adam Wharton was in the starting lineup at this level and the positioning of John Stones as a part-time midfielder created a passing resemblance to the Manchester club's 2023 treble winners.
Mixed Performance
Bellingham was a mixed bag. He created an opportunity for Eze after the break but often looked trying too hard. He made many rushed, misplaced passes. A pointless clash with an Albania midfielder in the early stages. The team looked disjointed for much of the second half. One Albania chance came after he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card came after an opponent took the ball from Broja and fouled the attacker.
Squad Strength Shows
In the end the squad's strength proved crucial. Tuchel introduced the Manchester City player, who seemed more naturally fitted to the role in which Bellingham operated earlier in the match, and Saka. Eventually Saka provided a set-piece for Kane to break the deadlock. It was a reminder that corners and free-kicks will play a key role in the upcoming tournament.
Bridge Still Stands
Nevertheless, the focus was on Bellingham. The excellence of Rashford’s assist for Kane’s header was a little lost due to the fuss of the player change. At the end, all eyes were on Bellingham. The coach approached to his side and pushed the player to acknowledge the English fans. Their connection remains intact. Tuchel is not willing to give up on him at this stage. Yet whether the coach is prepared to grant him the central position remains in doubt.
