The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
