During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern
When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a spyglass found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies beyond the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma went deeper than a defensive killing.
Like many elements of the final season, the truth about the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to sell to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Considering what is understood of his research, the case would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the awakening of his powers—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.
A second theory, the container could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the whispers of a dark entity, similar to how Will Byers was possessed by the Mind Flayer in season 2.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to gain strength.
His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the endgame conflict ahead.
