The President Invites Loved Ones of Injured Military Members to the White House

Former President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he has asked the loved ones of a Guard member tragically killed last week to come to the presidential home.

He added that he conversed with her family and they were “heartbroken”.

Background on the Heartbreaking Shooting

US army specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was fatally shot in a attack on last Wednesday in Washington DC.

Her fellow service member, US air force staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Memorials across West Virginia have taken place in their remembrance.

Presidential Invitation

The president explained he’s discussed a meeting at the presidential residence for the families of both individuals of the state Guard.

“I told them: ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a tough thing, come to the White House. We’re going to pay tribute to her,” Trump told journalists. “And in the same way with him, no matter the outcome.”

Community Response

Attendees assembled over the weekend at a local school in the state to pay respects to Sarah.

Both they had been serving with the West Virginia National Guard as part of Trump’s federal initiative to aid policing efforts in DC.

Paying Tribute to Sarah Beckstrom

“Sarah was the kind of student that teachers hoped for. She carried herself with quiet strength, a warm expression and a optimistic attitude that encouraged those around her,” the principal, the head of her previous school, told the media. “She was sweet, compassionate and always ready to support those in need.”

Funeral plans for Sarah are still being arranged.

Legal Measures and Policy Changes

Officials have charged a 29-year-old Afghan national with a charge of first-degree murder and charges of violent assault while carrying a weapon.

The event led the administration to pause asylum applications and cease issuing visas to owners of Afghan passports.

Status of Wolfe

Wolfe, a native of Martinsburg, enlisted in 2019 and is a graduate of Musselman high school, per the news agency.

He remains under medical supervision and is “in a critical fight”, West Virginia leader the governor said on a news program.

Attorney general Bondi told Fox News Sunday that she aimed to speak to the family.

Memory of Beckstrom

Beckstrom, from Summersville, completed her education from Webster County high school in 2023 and enlisted soon after, serving as a MP with distinction, as stated by the West Virginia National Guard.

“She had a lot of goodness and she certainly had courage,” the governor told the crowd at the vigil. “Though her time ended too soon, she has left a mark that’s going to last forever.”
