The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.

We are verifying images and video shared this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
